Warren considers riverfront improvements
Improvements to the city of Warren’s riverfront area, including construction of a park along the Mahoning River, is on the drawing board of the Fund for Warren’s Future group.
Dennis Blank, administrator for the Fund for Warren’s Future, asked Trumbull County commissioners this week to contribute $2 million of American Rescue Plan funds to project which would cast at least $6 million.
The project would include improvements to the existing Perkins and Packard parks as well as construction of a new riverfront park.
There will also be money needed for property acquisition, demolition and infrastructure costs including new water and sewer lines in two of Warren’s oldest neighborhoods. This will probably be the largest riverfront development since the 2004 construction of Warren Community Amphitheatre in Perkins Park.
Blank said the city has already contributed money to the project, but he plans to ask for an additional $2 million from Warren city officials. County commissioners are expected to make a decision on the funding request in a matter of weeks. Blank said another potential source of funding may be from the federal Appalachia Community Grant Program.
