Salem woman gets 8 years for using rag soaked with flammable material to start a fire
According to prosecutor Vito J. Abruzzino, a Columbiana County woman has been convicted and sentenced to prison for arson.
Former Salem resident and 41-year-old Rebekah Humeniuk-Shaw was sentenced to an indefinite prison term between eight and 12 years.
What was Rebekah Humeniuk-Shaw accused of?
She was convicted of trying to use a rag soaked with flammable material to ignite a fire in the crawl space of a residence on Fifth Street in Salem.
Three occupants inside were sleeping when this happened shortly before 4 a.m. on June 18, 2021.
According to the prosecutor’s office, the smoke woke them up before they were injured and they could get out safe, but the home sustained considerable damage.
Humeniuk-Shaw was convicted of aggravated arson and other charges.
She’ll also have to register as an arson offender every year.
Prosecutor Abruzzino thanked the City of Salem Ohio Police Department and retired Detective Dave Talbert and his staff for the investigation and successful prosecution of this case.
