Check out a sensory-friendly, not-so-haunted Halloween event for two days in Austintown
Gateways to Better Living serves over 250 people with developmental disabilities in Mahoning and Trumbull counties.
This week, the Mahoning Valley non-profit organization is hosting a sensory-friendly Halloween event for local community members.
The free “Not So Haunted” sensory friendly haunted house is open Thursday and Friday to raise awareness in the community about sensory-friendly events and the team at Gateways.
They’re hoping to give community members with developmental disabilities and the other kids in the communities who don’t prefer scary attractions a fun Halloween event to attend.
The event is happening at Austintown Plaza, the former Casals Aveda Institute.
Starting Thursday, the safe environment runs to 3 p.m. to providers, school groups and special needs visitors only.
On Friday, it’s open to the public from noon - 3 p.m. in the plaza at 6000 Mahoning Ave. in Austintown. There’s no price for admission.
Here’s a bit of what’s happening at the event:
Creepy carnival photo opportunity
“Not So Haunted” walk-through neon radical road with black lights
A practice trick-or-treat door to help sensory sensitive kids feel comfortable with the trick-or-treating experience and get something sweet.
Get a special trick-or-treat card for the kids to take if they have trouble with taking part in the typical trick-or-treat in their neighborhoods.
- Monster Mash dance party
Mix your own magic potion to take home
Visit the Gateways website or call (330) 792-2854 for more information on the event and services the organization provides.
