YOUNGSTOWN FIREFIGHTERS LOCAL 312: Fire shows consolidating stations doesn’t work

Just hours after council members were on the news discussing a feasibility study to “consolidate” more fire stations, the city has had another unfortunate reminder of why stations should remain open.

On Nov. 3, our firefighters responded to the city’s south side for an occupied structure fire. Ladder 24, stationed on West Indianola Avenue was closed and instead, Ladder 22 had to respond to the Glenwood Ave. fire from the further away downtown station.

As Councilwoman Davis stated on Friday, “seconds matter” in the media, our firefighters arrived short staffed to a well involved fire with victims trapped, where seconds did matter. One victim suffered serious burns and another was seriously injured from jumping to safety through a second story window.

Our citizens are already paying the price for reduced service due to station closures. They can’t afford any further “consolidation,” especially when the city is enjoying its best financial health in decades.
