SMARTS announces new Richard James Hanson Library in Youngstown
Students Motivated by the Arts, or SMARTS, in Youngstown hosted a free holiday open house on Tuesday for the whole community.
SMARTS is a community-based school that provides curriculum-focused programming for visual arts, music, dance, theater and creative writing inside and outside of the traditional classroom setting.
This week for the annual holiday open house, SMARTS set out holiday-themed hands-on arts activities for local kids in preschool through twelfth grade. Chef Christopher Bonacci provided refreshments.

During the holiday open house, SMARTS also hosted a ribbon cutting at 3 p.m. for a new addition to their educational resources: the Richard James Hanson Library.
According to SMARTS, the family of the late Richard James Hanson donated his collection of art education books to SMARTS to create this library.
SMARTS said the collection is going to be a resource library for SMARTS staff, teachers, and students. Many of the books are rare, and not available on loan anywhere in the Mahoning Valley area.
“We are grateful to Mr. Hanson’s family who valued his book collection and connected it to SMARTS,” said SMARTS. “Through the efforts of a SMARTIES parent and volunteer, they are organized and catalogued into a digital library system for ease and we have a dedicated staff person to maintain them. Literacy is at the core of the SMARTS Mission and this donation enables us to continue to grow and serve the community.“
