Dates set for special election to replace U.S. Rep. Bill Johnson

Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose announced a series of administrative deadlines to comply with a new special election set by Governor Mike DeWine for the pending vacancy in Ohio’s 6^th Congressional District.

The announcement follows a formal resignation by U.S. Rep. Bill Johnson on Jan. 2, which becomes effective on Jan. 21. Johnson has been hired to start as the new president of Youngstown State University starting Jan. 22.

The primary election will be held March 19 with the presidential primary while a general election for the seat will follow on June 11.

Here are other dates to know:

January 19: Declarations of Candidacy for partisan candidates and Declarations of Intent for write-in candidates must be filed by 4:00 p.m. with the Mahoning County Board of Elections

January 24: The Mahoning County Board of Elections must certify names of candidates that will appear on the March 19, 2024 ballot for the special primary.

January 26: Protests against partisan and write-in candidates must be filed with the Mahoning County Board of Elections by 4:00 p.m.

February 20: Deadline for voter registration for the March 19, 2024 presidential primary and special congressional election

February 21: Early voting begins for March 19, 2024

March 18: Nominating petitions of independent candidates for the June 11, 2024 special congressional election must be filed with the Mahoning County Board of Elections by 4:00 p.m.

March 19: Presidential Primary and Special Congressional Primary Election Day

May 13: Deadline for voter registration for the June 11, 2024 special congressional general election

May 14: Early voting begins for June 11, 2024

June 11: Special Congressional General Election Day
