The family of Ralph S. Sylvester Sr. and the community are mourning his death, remembering the beloved psychics teacher and coach.

Sylvester, 80, of Powell was born Feb. 3 in 1943 in Youngstown.

He passed away on Jan. 6 at Riverside Methodist Hospital after an illness.

Sylvester graduated from Youngstown East High School where he played football and attended Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland.

Sylvester was competing for a position with the Cleveland Browns after he graduated, only to be injured while tackling NFL legend Jim Brown.

He began teaching after his football career ended.

Sylvester worked as a teacher, administrator, coach and principal in several northeast Ohio districts throughout his career, including Youngstown City Schools and Hubbard Schools.

Sylvester retired from Poland Local Schools, where he taught a particularly enthusiastic physics class.

One year, his physics students honored their teacher by all showing up to class one day wearing “Educated by Ralph” t-shirts, complete with his caricature on it.
