Wearing red for heart health at monthly Walk with a Doc in Niles on Friday
Friday is Wear Red Day in honor of American Heart Month.
To spread awareness, Mercy Health’s St. Joe’s at the Eastwood Mall is highlighting what the Mahoning Valley needs to know about cardiovascular health during their monthly Walk with a Doc event.
When/where is Walk with a Doc?
Walk with a Doc is a free, physician-led community event organized by Mercy Health in Youngstown at St. Joe’s at the Mall in Niles.
Starting at 7:45 a.m. this Friday, participants will walk around the Eastwood Mall.
Participants can meet at the Target Concourse of the Eastwood Mall Complex, located at 5555 Youngstown Warren Road in Niles.
The event encourages group exercise and overall healthy living
Wear Red Day: Highlighting cardiovascular health
This month’s Walk with a Doc also falls on National Wear Red Day, part of a campaign to spread awareness about cardiovascular disease.
According to the World Health Organization, cardiovascular diseases include “coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular disease and rheumatic heart disease.”
These diseases are the number one cause of death around the world.
Don’t forget to wearing something red during the walk of National Wear Red Day.
Dr. Fareedah Goodwin-Capers is a board-certified family medicine physician at Mercy Health’s Howland Primary Care.
Before the walk begins, Dr. Goodwin-Capers will start a discussion on controlling high blood pressure, which can be a major contributing factor to heart disease.
“Heart disease is still the leading cause of death of men and women in the United States. There are many risk factors including diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, cigarette smoking and obesity. Having a family history of heart disease also increases the risk significantly. Raising awareness will hopefully encourage people to take strides to improve their cardiovascular health by healthy eating, increasing physical activity, and quitting smoking,” she said.
The St. Joe’s at the Mall team will also have information about hands-only CPR and practice kits from the American Heart Association available for the community.
