Route 46 in Howland (Niles Cortland Road) has seen its share of traffic tie ups and other problems in recent months.

While traffic is being backed up as the diverging diamond is being built at the heavily traveled Route 46/82 interchange, about a mile or so north of that tie-up on Monday morning, a new problem – a sinkhole in the middle of the roadway.

The Howland Fire Department posted on social media that the Ohio Department of Transportation is rushing to repair a sinkhole and pipe at Niles Cortland Road near Anderson Avenue.

A temporary traffic light will be set up for one traffic lane to proceed through the area. Heavy vehicles, like trucks and buses will be able to go westbound on Anderson, but not eastbound. These vehicles will be able to detour via Cranborook to Brookwood back to Route 46, the fire department. The post hopes that the temporary fix will be resolved within 24 hours.
