When is the Cleveland Guardians home opener?

The Guardians will start the season with 10 road games beginning in late March, but come home to Progressive Field for an special April 8, 5:10 p.m. matchup with the AL Central Division rivals Chicago White Sox.

A total solar eclipse, set to start around 3:15 p.m. that day, has prompted Cleveland to push back its start time against the White Sox to 5:10 p.m.

Gates will open at 2 p.m., just after the partial eclipse begins, according to the team.

Why did the eclipse change the time of the Cleveland Guardians home opener?

Several local school districts and downtown businesses have already announced closures that day due to the eclipse with Cleveland and many west and southwest suburbs squarely in the path of totality, something that will not happen for decades after this one.

The Guardians typically play their home opener at 4:10 p.m. However, the partial eclipse is not scheduled to end until close to 4:30 p.m.

According to a news release from the team, city officials anticipate significant downtown traffic on April 8 related to the eclipse. The Guardians encourage fans to plan accordingly and utilize RTA public transportation (train or bus) wherever possible. Cleveland’s hotel rooms have been sold out for months as visitors anticipate nearly four minutes of darkness when the moon moves between the Earth and sun.
