Boardman man arrested after his wife was shot in the leg during an argument
A man was arrested Thursday night in Boardman on a charge of shooting his wife in the leg during an argument in which he accused her of cheating.
According to the Boardman police report, officers were sent to a house on Grover Street in Boardman for a female who had been shot in the leg by her husband. When they arrived, police found the victim lying in a neighbor’s yard with the neighbor attempting to give aid.
What reportedly happened when Boardman police arrived?
The officers were informed that the victim was shot in the right leg and hip with a shotgun and that her husband was still inside the home with his son, armed with a shotgun, according to the report.
The report then states that officers made a perimeter around the house and warned the two men inside to “come out with their hands up” with a cruiser PA system.
The son then came to the front door and started yelling at the police. The report states that he was at first hesitant to comply to commands, but eventually exited the house. According to the report, when an officer attempted to cuff the son, he pulled away from her multiple times.
Another officer came to assist and ordered the son to the ground. He pulled away again and shouted obscenities at the police and put his fists up as if to fight. The report states that he began approaching the officers, still ignoring their commands to stop, and pushing them away when an officer struck him with a closed fist which took him down.
The report states that he was then put in handcuffs and told police that he had taken the shotgun from his father and destroyed it so that he couldn’t harm anyone else or himself.
As the officers were dealing with the son, the shooter exited the residence and surrendered to police without incident, according to the report.
The report states that the shooter told officers that it was an accident and that the gun just went off. He said he and his wife were fighting because “I caught her cheating on me after 30 years,” and he grabbed the gun because she wouldn’t talk to him.
The suspected shooter was arrested and charged with felonious assault and domestic violence. His arraignment is set for March 26 in Mahoning County court in Boardman.
