Ready to celebrate Cinco de Mayo in Youngstown?
The festival starts at 1 - 7 p.m. this upcoming Sunday at the Phelps Street Gateway Public Space, located at 1-99 N Phelps St. downtown. It’s close to the Youngstown Foundation Amphitheatre and Wean Park.
Cinco de Mayo starts with top hits played on Mexico and Latin America radio stations courtesy of DJ Tito and face-painting.
Grab food from vendors like Red Rican Food Truck, Wahaka Taco, TortA’mo and stop by Gringo’s over at 26 N Phelps St.
Craft and artisan vendors will have goods for sale, including LATIN MINGA, The Beaded Betch and Píncel & Barro Mexican Artisan Boutique.
Entertainment featuring The Labra Brothers
The Labra Brothers are the featured headliners for this year’s festival.
The northeast Ohio natives were voted “Best Latin” by the Cleveland Music Awards in 2022, followed by their recognition as “Best Latin Fusion Band” by Cleveland Magazine in 2023.
They’ve just been nominated for the La Mega Nota Hispanic Business Awards in the category of Music Entertainer of the Year.
The Labra Brothers are set to start playing from 5 - 7 p.m.
Stop by to see performances from dance group Azteca Guadalupana at 1:45 p.m. followed by music from Mariachi Santa Cecilia starting at 2:30 p.m.
In addition to music and dance, groups like Sociedad Mutualista Mexicana will have displays set up celebrating and educating about Mexican history like the Battle of Puebla.
At 3:30 p.m., there’s a contest to see who can make the best and loudest grito. Watch this video to learn more about grito de mariachi:
