Why community members are helping fight hunger at this year’s Trumbull County Fair

It’s also a friendly competition between regional junior fair committees across Ohio and Indiana.

Fighting hunger, stocking the trailer for four years

In 2023, the campaign donated more than 228,000 pounds of food to Ohio food banks.

Evan Hahn is the regional vice president for Farm Credit Mid-America.

He said it’s the fourth year Rural 1st and Farm Credit Mid-America have hosted the donation campaign.

“This initiative not only helps those in need within our communities but also fosters a sense of teamwork and giving back among our local junior fairs. We look forward to seeing the impact we can make together in 2024,” said Hahn.

Junior fairs compete to see who can bring in the most donations and are awarded prizes from the organizers Farm Credit Mid-America

The prize money helps pay for club activities like going to statewide junior fair conferences.

At the end of the week’s events, the total weight of all donations will be calculated, with first, second and third-place prizes of $5,000, $3,500 and $1,500 awarded to the fairs that raise the most food this summer.

How to donate

Donate non-perishable food, like peanut butter, pasta and anything that can be stored on the shelf, to the campaign during the Trumbull County Fair, starting July 9 through July 14.

Look for Fight Hunger, Stock the Trailer signs for drop-off spots.

Donations can also be dropped off before the fair starts at the office during regular hours, from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The Trumbull County Fair Office is located at Gate C at 899 Everett Hull Road in Cortland.

Each county fair receives $500 for participating.
