Gateways to Better Living enjoyed a day of fun-filled philanthropy as it hosted its annual benefit golf to raise money for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The Youngstown-based nonprofit is an organization dedicated to housing and providing support for people with special needs. On June 17, it hosted its 18th Annual Benefit Golf Outing to raise money for its facilities in Mahoning and Trumbull counties.

How many golfers took part at the event?

The event, hosted at the Youngstown Country Club, drew 112 golfers from local businesses, marking the largest turnout in Gateways’ history. Golfers were joined by people who benefit from Gateways’ services and embarked on 18 holes of scramble tournament play.

“This outing is more than just a game of golf; it’s about rallying together as a community to support a worthy cause,” Gateways CEO, Karl Ware said. “The funds raised today will significantly impact the lives of over 200 individuals with developmental disabilities, ensuring they receive the care and support they deserve.”

The organization also offered prizes for a hole-in-one contest which included two-year lease on a 2024 Ford Escape, a Yeti Cooler, $1,000 Cash, entry into a raffle for a Masters Package, a five-day cruise, and top-of-the-line golf clubs. Attendees also had catered breakfast, lunch and dinner for the participants.

Despite the sweltering weather, participants were fortunate to commence the tournament with a 9 a.m. shotgun start, skillfully avoiding the intense sun and afternoon rainstorm. Entertainment was also provided off the greens, with a 50/50 raffle and Basket Raffle adding to the excitement.

Gateways’ emphasized its gratitude to its 48 local sponsors whose support ensured the outing’s success.

“It’s heartwarming to see the community come together in such a meaningful way. We look forward to this event all year” Kristie Murphy, Gateways Community Engagement Director, said.

Gateways’ next fundraising event will be held in mid-September with its Bingo and Bling designer purse bingo event.
