Uniquely Trumbull County: When to visit President McKinley’s birthplace museum, childhood home replica
When there were only about 300 people living in this Trumbull County town, one of the residents born in 1843 would one day serve as the nation’s 25th president.
William McKinley was born on South Main Street on January 29, 1843 in Niles.
Now there’s a museum in his hometown dedicated to his life, as well as a replica of his childhood home.
How William McKinley’s birthplace is honored in Niles
When you visit the National McKinley Birthplace Memorial in Niles, picture it as a one-room schoolhouse.
That same site was once McKinley’s first classroom, now home to the memorial as well as the McKinley Memorial Library.
Learn about McKinley’s childhood, career in law and journey to the White House at the National McKinley Birthplace Memorial at 40 North Main St. in Niles. There’s a statue of McKinley, as well as informative displays.
The National McKinley Birthplace Memorial is open from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and admission is free.
Stick around for one of the free concerts starting at 6:30 p.m. on certain Thursdays, part of the McKinley Memorial Museum Music on the Lawn series.
A few steps away, visit a replica of McKinley’s childhood home, the McKinley Birthplace Home and Research Center.
It was built in 2003 as a replica of the home McKinley was born in, which was moved twice and then burned down.
There’s a gift shop and library dedicated to President McKinley’s time in office at the house, which stands at 40 South Main St. in Niles.
Visit the McKinley Birthplace Museum and Research Center from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday this summer. There’s no charge for admission.
