A man who assaulted his ex-girlfriend and threw a brick at her car has been sentenced to prison.
Marcus D. Hemmingway, 27, of Charles Street SE, Warren pleaded guilty to first-degree aggravated burglary, second-degree escape and a misdemeanor criminal damaging and endangering charges.
He was immediately sentenced to a composite five to seven-and-a-half years in prison. A count of felonious assault was nolled as part of the plea agreement made between prosecutors and Hemmingway’s defense team.
Hemmingway was accused of walking into his former girlfriend’s apartment at Roberts Avenue Northwest, punching her in the face and breaking her jaw in the fall of 2023. Weeks later, he was found again in the parking lot of the same apartment complex and threw a concrete block through the windshield of her vehicle.
Hemmingway was later arrested ion Northwest Boulevard later that day, reports stated, but he managed to escape from the police cruiser before being recaptured. The victim’s statement was read aloud in court prior to sentencing. Judge Sean J. O’Brien stated the indefinite prison term was appropriate.
“Your actions are unbelievable… to break the jaw of the mother of your child. You are lucky that this [prison sentence] is all that you are getting,” O’Brien said.
