Niles woman convicted for strangling her girlfriend in domestic fight
A 26-year-old Niles woman received consecutive prison sentences totaling four years after a Trumbull County jury on June 20, 2024, found her guilty of two counts strangulation, one count of abduction and a lesser included simple assault charge.
Allyson Long was convicted of trying to choke a former live-in girlfriend as well as restraining her. The jury of 10 women and two men, after about three hours of deliberation, chose to convict her of a lesser-included assault charge instead of the felonious assault felony Long was indicted on.
At sentencing, Common Pleas Judge Andrew D. Logan noted Long’s history of criminal offenses and said consecutive sentences were needed to protect the public.
At trial, assistant Prosecutor Kevin Trapp brought to the stand several witnesses, including the victim, who testified Long had put her hands around her neck more than 20 times during an altercation on Dec. 12, 2023, at a Howland home.
Trapp had asked for the maximum six years in prison for Long.
