Canfield bank raises money for displaced people affected by Realty Tower explosion
A Canfield bank pitched in with the Youngstown community to gathered money and supplies for residents displaced by the Realty Tower explosion.
Several downtown Youngstown residents were ordered to evacuate after the remnants of the building were declared hazardous by structural engineers. The International Towers apartments in particular housed many residents who were displaced after being given an evacuation order.
To show solidarity, the Farmers National Bank of Canfield and many community volunteers raised $1,500 and two boxes full of supplies throughout the month of June. The bank itself also made an additional $5,000 donation.
The bank started receiving monetary donations from customers and employees from Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties. They also collected microwavable or ready-made food and drinks in addition to paper products such as plates, paper towels and disposable silverware.
“In times like this, our Valley is known for coming together to lift each other up,” Farmers National Bank Chief Retail and Marketing Officer Amber Wallace said. “We can only hope to play a small part in helping our community get back on its feet.”
The money and supplies will go to the United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley who will then distribute it to people affected by the blast with the shelter and food needs.
