This week, the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County wrapped up Summer Discovery with finisher parties at library branches.

Launched on June 1 at Boardman Park, PLYMC’s Summer Discovery Program has been an amazing success this year, according to PLYMC director and CEO Aimee Fifarek.

“Summer Discovery is a great program for young people as well as adults and is an important program in our efforts to promote and increase literacy rates in our community,” said Fifarek.

With over 4,200 participants in this years’ program, staff saw an increase in participation this year by over 15%.

The largest gain in participants was zero-five years old, which increased about 25%.

“With thousands of participants this year, our library continues to be a leader in promoting the love of and importance of reading,” said Fifarek

Librarians host the parties to celebrate community members who completed the program.

Participants in the program can still be listed as Finishers by submitting their information online or at their library through August 15.

On Monday, visit the Main Library on Wick Avenue at 5:30 p.m. for a community screening and discussion of the documentary Right to Read.

The documentary shares the stories of an activist, a teacher, and two American families who fight to provide our youngest generation with the most foundational indicator of life-long success: the ability to read.

Find more information about the documentary and the screening on the PLYMC website.
