The Ohio Department of Commerce awarded over $100,000 to help maintain nonprofit cemeteries in 32 counties, including four Mahoning Valley cemeteries.

The funds are dispersed by the Division of Real Estate and Professional Licensing, according to superintendent Daphne Hawk.

“This is the sixth year the Division has awarded grant funds to assist registered nonprofit cemeteries in completing critical projects that may otherwise never be addressed due to lack of funding,” said Hawk. “We are honored to provide these important funds to help Ohio’s beautiful cemeteries improve record keeping, restore monuments, repair fencing, improve signage and enhance visitor safety, all of which helps preserve a piece of our state’s history.”

In Mahoning County, the Eckis Cemetery and Jackson Township Cemetery will receive grants from the state, as well as the Hubbard Union Cemetery and Girard Liberty Union Cemetery in Trumbull County.

Every burial permit costs $2.50, and one dollar from every permit goes toward helping cemeteries.

Cemeteries that applied and did not receive funding this year are encouraged to apply again next year, according to Hawk.
