Waterloo High School student-athlete excels on and off the field
A Waterloo High School student is going above and beyond both on, and off the field. Senior Landon McClain, who plays football, basketball, and baseball is a special young man, according to Dean of Students, Athletic Director, and Head Football Coach Mike Devies.
“Landon balances an intense academic and athletic schedule and still somehow manages to put in countless volunteer hours for school activities,” said Devies. “He is the first one to volunteer anytime our team helps out in the community or school.”
Devies said McClain leads the football team as a captain and is currently taking college classes. He said McClain is a great role model for not only the team, but for younger athletes as well.
“He is a fierce competitor with a great work ethic,” Devies said.
Devies went on to explain that the team does a lot of community service projects including cleaning and mulching community parks, volunteering to clean the fairgrounds every fall for the Portage County Fair, food donations, work grandparents day, assisting with kindergarten drop off at school, youth camps, and more. He said McClain is always first in line to help.
Devies said McClain, who is also a part of the National Honor Society, is committed to being the best he can be no matter the situation and is willing to work as long as necessary to master his craft, and make others around him better.
He shared that it has been a pleasure to be a small part of McClain’s busy life.
“He is a great leader and a great human being. He puts the needs of others and the team above his own,” Devies said. “Being a selfless servant of others may be the greatest compliment you can give another human being, and I believe Landon is very deserving of this compliment.”
