“Both available and affordable:” Youngstown named least expensive place to retire in U.S.

Researchers said Youngstown is one of five best places for retirement in the world in the upcoming fiscal year.

“There’s an abundance of amenities for both demographics, young adults and retired homeowners looking to move,” said Guy Coviello, president and CEO of the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber.

According to U.S. News & World Report’s research, Youngstown is the most affordable U.S. city to move to after retiring for people on a budget.

“For everyone, we have an abundance of quality healthcare, lakes, golf courses, and other recreational options,” said Coviello. “We have world-class venues for live entertainment, arts and culture, [and] low taxes, and, as we have painfully seen recently from events in the South, a temperate climate where homeowners insurance is both available and affordable.”

Mahoning County is in the top five Ohio counties seeing the most home value growth.

The median-priced home in the area is $137,546 and the lowest average monthly rent is $706.

According to Rent Cafe, there are over 6,000 more apartments expected to be built in Youngstown by 2028.

“For young professionals, we have good-paying jobs with short commute times. We have easy access to big city amenities in Pittsburgh and Cleveland,” said Coviello.

Similarly inexpensive cities for retirees include Hickory, North Carolina; Springfield, Missouri; Brownsville, Texas; Huntington, West Virginia and Ashland, Kentucky-Ohio.
