Northeast Ohio nonprofit hosting free household necessities giveaway in Youngstown
Chauncey A. Phillips started a nonprofit called Colony Collective Co. Inc to help underserved communities get essential supplies and support they need in the greater northeast Ohio area.
“We used to be one of the families that fell through the cracks; what I mean by that is a lot of time with low income families, there’s a middle month crisis,” said Phillips. “Say you go to a pantry or some type of assistance, you can only really go once a month, and if you have a bigger family, those supplies really don’t last. This initiative is to help families afford more.”
Phillips is originally from New Orleans.
“Youngstown was our home when we first moved to Ohio,” he said. “Basically we’re just trying to expand, and trying to get a building so that we can do this in other places around northeast Ohio and so on. That’s the mission: to be able to help everybody.”
Phillips is working with the city of Youngstown, first ward council member Julius Oliver and the parks and recreation department to host a giveaway for residents in Youngstown.
It’s happening at 1 p.m. Nov. 16 at Henry Stambaugh Golf Course on Gypsy Lane in Youngstown.
According to Chrissy Mullins with the Youngstown Department of Parks and Recreation, all you need to receive your goods is a photo I.D.
Mullins said it’s the first year Youngstown has worked with Phillips’ nonprofit.
“We are thrilled to partner with Chauncey Phillips to provide essential household items to our community. This collaboration reflects our ongoing commitment to supporting those in need and fostering a stronger, more resilient neighborhood for all,” she said.
Colony Collective Co.’s distribution network started in Cleveland, but they’re growing and hoping to one day bring supply distribution centers to more Ohio communities.
“In Cleveland, we do it every first and third Saturday, which covers the beginning and the middle of the month, to help the families,” Phillips said.
According to Phillips, supplies will be given out until they’re gone.
