This holiday season, local Meijer retailers have lowered prices for turkeys and are giving back to the Mahoning Valley community members in need.

The company anticipates selling more than one million turkeys in the weeks before Thanksgiving, and nine million pounds of russet and sweet potatoes.

Meijer’s frozen turkeys are priced at 49 cents per pound or lower through Nov. 30 across the country.

Brian Dunigan is store director of Meijer in Youngstown at the Boardman-Canfield Road

“As a family-owned company, we understand the importance of holiday gatherings like Thanksgiving,” said Jenn Martin, vice president of fresh at Meijer. “We’re working hard to offer low prices on Thanksgiving staples so our customers can focus on enjoying a special meal with family and friends without having to worry about the cost.”

The Butterball brand frozen turkeys are priced at 99 cents per pound, while the Butterball fresh turkeys are $1.99 per pound.

For a family of four to six people, Dunigan says a grocery trip to Meijer can cost as low as $37 for the turkey and all the fixings.

“We want our customers to be able to enjoy a traditional holiday meal without having to worry about cost – and that includes the delicious sides,” he said. “For $37, that includes a 14-pound turkey and Meijer brand ingredients to make Thanksgiving favorites like mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, sweet potato casserole and cranberry sauce, as well as turkey stuffing, gravy, dinner rolls and pumpkin pie.”

Simply Give food pantry partner God’s Warehouse

When customers purchase Meijer brand items between Nov. 24-30, Meijer is giving one meal to Simply Give food pantry partners.

That includes Frederik’s by Meijer, True Goodness by Meijer and Purple Cow.

“This is the third consecutive year that Meijer customers will help feed their communities during the week of Thanksgiving through the Simply Give hunger relief program,” Dunigan said.

According to Dunigan, this collective effort has resulted in four million meals being donated to Simply Give food pantry partners in each of the last two years, including God’s Warehouse in Youngstown.

“Each of the more than 270 Meijer stores across the Midwest partner with multiple local food pantries through our Simply Give program, like God’s Warehouse right here in Youngstown, keeping the money within the community,” he said. “Our commitment to feeding families by stocking the shelves of food pantries across the Midwest is a year-round effort.”

Shoppers can also add a $10 Simply Give donation card to their cart, which is converted into a Meijer food-only gift card and given to the food pantry selected by the individual store.

On Dec. 14, Meijer is matching all donations through Simply Give cards bought by customers.

“The Boardman store recently made donations to Project MKC and Veteran’s Outreach through the Meijer Team Gives program, which empowers team members to collectively donate $10,000 to a local nonprofit of their choice,” said Dunigan.
