11 tree-lighting ceremonies, local holiday celebrations happening in Mahoning Valley

There’s only a month left of 2024 before a new year begins. Looking for family-friendly activities to get into the holiday spirit?

Mahoning Matters has compiled a list of 11 events in late November in Mahoning, Columbiana and Trumbull counties.

Mahoning County

  • At Penguin City Brewing Company, Southside Boxing is hosting an amateur boxing show starting at 7 p.m. Nov. 23 in Youngstown. The winners of the Southside Boxing Thanksgiving Feast boxing show for amateurs will receive a championship belt. Tickets are $25; contact Jack Loew at (330) 501-5713 for more information.

  • When you visit the Memories of Christmas Past exhibit at Arms Family Museum before or on Nov. 24, the Mahoning Valley Historical Society will offer a buy-one get-one free admission for bringing in a canned good donation. It’s in partnership with Project Feed our Valley. The Memories of Christmas Past exhibit is open from noon - 4 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday at 648 Wick Ave. in Youngstown.

  • Bring your pets to the Southern Park Mall to get a photo with Santa Claus. No reservations are necessary to participate in the photos, which will be offered from 5 - 7 p.m. in the Center Court at the Southern Park Mall in Boardman. If you can’t make it this week, Santa will be back in Center Court for more pictures on Dec. 2 and Dec. 9.

  • The Poland Library will welcome Santa and his reindeer for a visit from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. on Nov. 30 at 311 S. Main St. in Poland. No registration is required and guests are invited to bring their own cameras for pictures.

Trumbull County

  • The Hartford community in Trumbull County will hold its annual tree lighting from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Nov. 23, with many community organizations participating. Events will be held near the township center off state Route 7. Santa Claus will be visiting the municipal building.
  • The National McKinley Birthplace Memorial Museum in Niles will host the annual Festival of Trees starting Nov. 29. There is no entry fee, but participants provide the tree and decorations. The event drew more than 1,700 visitors in 2023. Call Belinda at 330-652-4273 for questions and to sign in.

  • The Fowler community in Trumbull County will hold an “old Country Christmas” from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. on Nov. 30 at the Fowler General Store at 3457 Youngstown Kingsville Road. “Old Country Christmas” will feature local vendors, refreshments and music.
  • The city of Cortland will host a tree lighting, offer carriage rides, crafts for kids and a visit from Santa from 4 to 8 p.m. on Nov. 30 at the Cortland City Center, 400 N. High St.

Columbiana County

  • The city of Columbiana will open its Joy Christmas Light Show at Firestone Park on Nov. 22 at dusk. The event will be open through Dec. 28 at Firestone Park, 298 E. Park Ave.
  • The annual Columbiana Christmas Parade downtown is from 6 - 8 p.m. Nov. 22. Santa will be coming to town as he joins the parade before journeying to the Ice Castle at the Firestone Park light show. For the parade, downtown merchants will hold open house specials and sell concessions including popcorn, hot chocolate and music.

  • Support small business owners at the Winter Craft Show, open to the public from noon - 4 p.m. on Nov. 24 at The Vineyards at Pine Lake, located at 14101 Market St. in Columbiana.
