Bid placed for pedestrian bridge project over Mahoning River in Warren
There are over 370 bridges in Trumbull County, and officials in Warren are getting ready to start revitalizing a walking bridge over the Mahoning River that’s been closed since 2018.
Packard Park Pedestrian Bridge project
Construction is expected to start this year and extend into 2026 for the Packard Park Pedestrian replacement project, according to Paul Makosky, city of Warren engineering director.
The new Packard Park Pedestrian Bridge will replace the 279-foot bridge over the Mahoning River in Warren.
It was originally constructed in the early 1980’s; officials closed the bridge five years ago after concerns about the structure.
The cost to replace this bridge is over $1.2 million, and city officials received the lowest bid from The Shook Company.
Eighty percent of the Packard Park project is funded by the Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement program.
During construction, all facilities within Packard Park will remain open to the public.
The Mahoning River Water Trail will remain open to recreational boating traffic during weekends and holidays during bridge demolition and construction activities in the summer.
The Water Trail will be closed to boaters at the nearest upstream access point during bridge construction. The nearest access point is located 1.4 miles north of the bridge at Burbank Park.
Signs will be posted instructing boaters of the closure.
Another Mahoning River bridge revitalization project on the way in Warren
The city of Warren also used over $1 million from the Federal Highway Administration for trails over the Mahoning River at Lovers Lane, Burbank and Bullhead Parks.
“Making our public spaces safer and more attractive helps improve quality of life for our residents,” said Rep. Nick Santucci (R-Howland Twp.). “I’m pleased to see these state dollars coming back to the district.”
According to Gary Shaffer, Trumbull County’s deputy engineer, the South Main Avenue Bridge in Warren is the next structure getting a revamp.
The South Main Avenue Bridge project will be going out to bid in May, with construction anticipated to begin in August, according to Shaffer.
The bridge is south of downtown, used by both drivers and pedestrians to get around Warren.
Crews will replace the existing bridge, as well as pavement, sidewalk and concrete curb, bridge lighting and minor drainage enhancements.
The public will be notified of closures via press releases and detour signage will be put up in advance of the closure.
