What to expect during Youngstown’s first community-run, family-friendly Pride
In addition to the area’s annual LGBTQIA+ Pride Month festival in Warren and Columbiana County, a new community event is starting this summer in Youngstown.
Local residents, families, supporters and members of the Mahoning Valley LGBTQIA+ community are invited to Youngstown Community Pride on June 7.
Daphne Carr is the co-founder of Mahoning Valley Queer Action who are organizing the event around Wick Park East in Youngstown.
“It’s time for us to get back to our roots - coming together and breaking bread, talking together, and figuring out how to support one another. Our Community Pride event prioritizes community discussion and fellowship - and that’s what we need right now,” Carr said.
Scheduled events start at noon on June 7, including workshops on LGBTQIA+ history and an interactive game at 4 p.m. At 4:30 p.m., catch the Dinner Theatre Rejects, followed by live music at 5 p.m.
The festival is happening both inside around the Unitarian Universalist Church of Youngstown and outside on Elm Street.
The Mahoning Valley Queen Action group is providing a free vegan community meal with gluten free and kid-friendly options, as well as picnic activities, a family friendly area, community sports and outdoor activities. There will be a resource fair with over 20 booths featuring local services and organizations that support LGBTQIA+ rights and health services.
Youngstown Community Pride is free and open to all who support the LGBTQIA+ community.
According to Mahoning Valley Queer Action, there will be private security on hand as well as community-based safety services.
