As families across Northeast Ohio prepare for the upcoming school year, one local initiative is stepping up once again to provide critical support.

The 5th Annual Back to School Shoe Giveaway will take place on Saturday, August 2 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. at North High School, aiming to ease both mental and financial stress for families during these challenging economic times.

Event organizers said more than 1,000 pairs of brand-new shoes will be distributed to school-aged children on a first-come, first-served basis, helping students step into the new school year with confidence. Organizers expect over 3,000 attendees, including children and families, making this one of the largest back-to-school outreach events in the region.

This year’s event goes beyond shoes—attendees will benefit from a variety of free resources and services including:

• Free onsite haircuts for young men

• A curated lineup of community vendors and organizations offering guidance, tools, and programs tailored to support families facing financial hardship

“Back-to-school season should be filled with excitement, not anxiety,” said Pastor Deante Lavender from The Remedy Church, the event’s lead organizer. “This event is about more than shoes—it’s about dignity, community, and ensuring that every child starts the year feeling prepared and proud.”

The initiative is powered by a coalition of generous financial partners, including: The Remedy Church, Lucky Shoes, Huntington Akron Foundation, New Balance, Darius Bazley, The House of the Lord, First Congregational Church of Hudson, Beyond Expectations Barber College, Levels Barber College, and Kick N’ Cuts.

“Together, these organizations are making a lasting impact on the lives of Akron-area families, one step at a time,” said Lavender.
