Youngstown nonprofits receive $483K supporting future of Glenwood Fresh Market
The Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corporation received financial support to ensure the availability of fresh fruit and vegetables at the Glenwood Fresh Market for the next three years.
YNDC received $483,000 from one of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture programs supporting projects aimed at reducing food insecurity and promoting healthy eating.
The grant for the Glenwood Fresh Market came from the National Institute of Food and Agriculture’s Gus Schumacher Nutrition Incentive Program: Produce Prescription Program.
The Glenwood Fresh Market provides residents of Mahoning County with free, year-round access to fresh fruits, vegetables and other healthy grocery staples.
The fresh market has served more than 3,400 people since it began operation in 2022, according to Ian Beniston, executive director of YNDC.
“YNDC is honored to receive this grant award that will strengthen the evidence based approached the Glenwood Fresh Market provides to increase healthy eating and lifestyles of residents of the Mahoning Valley. We are grateful to the USDA and our project partners including Mercy Health Foundation Mahoning Valley, Western Reserve Health Foundation and Swanston Charitable Fund for making this award possible,” he said.
In addition to healthy meals, the market also provides free health screenings, nutrition literacy courses and cooking demonstrations to members of the Glenwood Fresh Market.
Residents can become members if they are a SNAP recipient or their household is living under 130% of Federal Poverty Guidelines.
