This is how much money smoking costs the average Ohio smoker over a lifetime
If you’ve been looking for a sign to quit smoking, this may be it.
According to a new study by WalletHub experts, smoking costs $600 billion each year in the U.S. From packs of cigarettes a day to healthcare costs associated with smoking and more, the cost of smoking is higher than ever.
“Over a lifetime, smokers lose out on millions of dollars they could have made if they’d invested the money they spent on tobacco. Smokers also tend to have lower wages, higher health care costs and higher home insurance premiums,” said WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo.
In the study, each state was analyzed based on how much the average smoker spends on smoking based on five key points: out-of-pocket costs, financial opportunity cost, health care cost and income lost. After determining the dollar amount per smoker, each state was then ranked from highest to lowest (1 to 50).
