“This Is Youngstown” exhibit pays homage to Hispanic heritage, history
A local creator is paying tribute to the historical impact and legacy of Youngstown’s Hispanic community through a photography exhibit that’s open to the community until Feb. 1.
Tony Nicholas is a longtime local artist and photographer who’s collected original photographs of Hispanic business owners, professionals, blue-collar workers and every day residents in Youngstown.
Those pictures came together to create This Is Youngstown: A Photo Documentary Project Celebrating the Hispanic Community, on display at the Tyler History Center.
This Is Youngstown features residents like Anna Rodriguez, owner of Anna’s Cookin in Austintown, the Labra Brothers and former Youngstown Law Director Ed Romero.
For Nicholas, the exhibit is a celebration of the Hispanic people of his home city. Its focus is on their “grit, determination, innovation and longevity – qualities the city’s whole population have in common,” according to the Mahoning Valley Historical Society.
Stop by the exhibit inside the Tyler History Center, which is open from noon - 4 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday at 325 W Federal St. in Youngstown
