In a season filled with many top area baseball teams splitting games with other top squads, the powerful Youngstown Cardinal Mooney Cardinals have been the lone picture of consistency and remain the No. 1-ranked team in this week’s mahoningmatters.com Super 7 baseball poll.
Here’s a look at the latest rankings:
No. 1 YOUNGSTOWN CARDINAL MOONEY
The Cardinals easily remain No. 1 in the poll and are one of the top-ranked teams in Ohio in the Division IV ranks.
The Cardinals have rolled to a 9-0 record, combining outstanding pitching with a strong offense. Mooney is outscoring its opponents 81-12 this spring.
Mooney defeated Lake Center Christian (4-0), Springfield (5-1), West Branch (11-0) and LaBrae (9-1) last week.
The Cardinals, who are giving up less than a run per game, will play Youngstown Ursuline twice this week. They also have a game slated against Canfield.
No. 2 POLAND
The Poland Bulldogs are No. 2 in the poll this week.
Poland has compiled a 4-1 record and topped the Springfield Tigers (9-3) and Salem Quakers (7-6) in their most recent games.
The Bulldogs are scheduled to play Girard, Niles, Ashtabula St. John and South Range this week.
No. 3 LAKEVIEW
The Lakeview Bulldogs jumped into the rankings at No. 3 after an impressive week that included wins over Niles twice by scores of 5-0 and 10-0, along with triumphs over Austintown Fitch (14-1) and Youngstown Ursuline (6-1).
The Bulldogs, who are 7-3, are surrendering just over one run per game this spring.
Lakeview will play Hubbard, LaBrae and Marlington this week.
No. 4 YOUNGSTOWN URSULINE
The Ursuline Irish hold down the No. 4 spot in the rankings.
The Irish are 5-2 and have won five of their past six games. They defeated Struthers (15-2) and Toronto (7-4) last week.
The Irish will play rival Cardinal Mooney, Warren JFK and LaBrae this week.
No. 5 LaBRAE
The LaBrae Vikings are No. 5 this week.
The Vikings have compiled a 6-1 record with their loss coming to No. 1-ranked Mooney.
LaBrae will face Lakeview and Youngstown Ursuline this week.
No. 6 WESTERN RESERVE
Western Reserve is No. 6 in the poll for a second consecutive week.
The Blue Devils have compiled a 6-2 record and posted triumphs over Campbell Memorial (12-3) and Youngstown East (24-1) in their most recent games.
Western Reserve will play Lowellville, Jackson-Milton, Mineral Ridge, Southington Chalker and Sebring this week.
No. 7 SPRINGFIELD
The Springfield Tigers round out this week’s poll at No. 7.
The Tigers, who lead their tier of the Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference at 4-0, are 6-3 overall with two of their three losses coming to No. 1-ranked Cardinal Mooney and No. 2-ranked Poland.
The Tigers will play Mineral Ridge and McDonald this week.
