Is it legal in Ohio to ride in the bed of a pickup truck? Here’s what the law says
If you’re going for a joyride in the bed of a truck, think again.
Sure, it might be fun or convenient for passengers that won’t fit inside the truck, but is it actually legal to ride in the bed of a pickup truck?
Here’s what to know:
Is it legal in Ohio to ride in the bed of a truck?
Well, it depends on a few things.
Ohio law says that no driver should “knowingly permit any person who has not attained the age of sixteen years to ride in the unenclosed or unroofed cargo storage area of the driver’s vehicle if the vehicle is traveling faster than twenty-five miles per hour.”
So, technically it’s not illegal if you are older. Of course, it is still dangerous.
“While it’s legal for most people to ride in the bed of a truck in Georgia, it doesn’t mean it’s safe or something you should do. It’s considered a risky driving behavior,” as stated in a blog from Hines Law.
Additionally, if the driver gets into an accident, there’s a higher chance of serious injuries or death because there are no protections in place.
If drivers are caught not abiding by the law, they are guilty of a minor misdemeanor.
