Women’s tennis gets Ohio State in Columbus on Saturday in NCAA Tournament
The Youngstown State women’s tennis team will begin its ninth appearance in the NCAA Tournament at Ohio State at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Auer Tennis Complex.
The Penguins are one of 64 teams in the field, earning the automatic bid as the tournament champions from the Horizon League. YSU is heading to Columbus for the postseason for the second time, joining the 2016 team. Overall, Youngstown State is making its ninth appearance in the tournament since 2014 and its fourth trip to the postseason in the last five years.
Ohio State is the No. 3 overall seed after going 23-4 and losing to Michigan in the championship match of the Big Ten Tournament on Sunday. The four-team pod in Columbus will also feature Notre Dame (18-9) and Arizona (20-9), and the winner between the Penguins and Buckeyes will take on the winner of the matchup between the Fighting Irish and Wildcats.
Youngstown State finished in a four-way tie for the Horizon League’s regular-season championship, and it went 3-0 in the conference tournament in Cincinnati over the weekend. The Penguins beat Northern Kentucky 4-0 in the first round, Milwaukee 4-1 in the semifinals and Cleveland State 4-1 in the championship match.
Junior Hanna Telzynska, an All-Horizon League First Team selection, holds a 13-10 record at No. 1 singles while going 11-7 at No. 1 doubles with Yoana Dudova. Juniors Lorena Cedeno and Yeseniia Ovcharova earned All-League Second Team honors as YSU’s No. 2 and No. 3 singles players, respectively.
