State power Austintown Fitch which has mastered every challenge in its path this spring remains the No. 1 team in this week’s mahoningmatters.com Super 7 softball poll. The top seven teams in the poll own a combined record of 132 wins and just 20 losses.

Here’s a look at this week’s rankings which includes several changes:

No. 1 AUSTINTOWN FITCH

The Fitch Falcons have been a machine, both in the pitching circle and at bat this season, and remain the No. 1 team in the poll.

The Falcons stayed unbeaten at 17-0 last week and recorded a pair of wins over rival Boardman by scores of 6-0 and 6-2. Fitch leads the All-American Conference standings with a 6-0 record.

How dominant has Fitch been this spring? Consider this statistic: The Falcons have outscored their competition 185-39 and their pitching staff has given up one run or less in seven of their wins.

The Falcons will face fellow Ohio power Strasburg this week as well as the Tallmadge Blue Devils.

No. 2 BEAVER LOCAL

Beaver Local, which has been a force in the Division IV ranks this season, jumps into the rankings at No. 2 this week.

The Beavers, members of the Buckeye 8 which includes schools along the Ohio River, are 19-3 and posted wins over Bellaire (7-1), Salem (10-0) and Oak Glen, Wva. (4-2) last week.

Beaver Local has outscored its foes 186-53.

The Beavers will play Bellaire, rival East Liverpool and Minerva this week.

No. 3 WARREN CHAMPION

The Champion Golden Flashes vault all the way to No. 3 in the rankings after an impressive week.

The Flashes are 11-4 and have won eight games in a row, including a big win over formerly No. 2 ranked Lakeview (4-3) last week. The Golden Flashes also bested the Chardon Hilltoppers (8-4) last week.

Champion’s pitching staff has held six of its opponents to one run or less this spring.

The Flashes will face Newton Falls, Garrettsville Garfield and Warren Howland this week.

No. 4 LAKEVIEW

Lakeview fell from No. 2 to No. 4 after sustaining a 4-3 loss to Champion last week.

The Bulldogs, who lead the Northeast 8 Conference and are 17-4 overall, will play Poland, Girard and South Range this week.

No. 5 HOWLAND

The Howland Tigers who have won six games in a row, hold down the No. 5 spot in the ratings.

The Tigers own a 12-4 ledger and posted triumphs over Streetsboro (10-0) and Burton Berkshire (5-3) last week.

The Tigers will go up against Canfield, Salem and Warren Champion this week.

No. 6 MAPLEWOOD

Maplewood, which is enjoying an outstanding season, is No. 5 in the poll.

The Rockets are 17-1 and have reeled off 17 straight wins.

Maplewood, which has outscored its opponents 171-19 this season, defeated Rootstown (7-0) and Bristol (23-1) last week.

The Rockets are set to play Fairport Harding, Mathews, Girard and Pymatuning Valley this week.

No. 7 (tie) SOUTH RANGE

South Range enters the poll in a tie at No. 7 this week.

The Raiders own a 14-6 record and have won eight games in a row, including triumphs over Elyria Catholic (11-4), Struthers (21-0) and Mohawk (Pa.) Area (2-1) last week.

The Raiders will play Hubbard, Niles McKinley and Lakeview this week.

No. 7 (tie) McDONALD

Rounding out the poll this week and tied at No. 7 is McDonald.

The Blue Devils, who are 15-2 overall and lead their tier of the Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference, recorded shutout wins over Jackson-Milton (6-0) and Springfield (11-0) last week.

McDonald is penciled in to play Lowellville and Springfield this week.
