Youngstown Cardinal Mooney, which has won eight of its last nine games, remained the No. 1-ranked team in this week’s mahoningmatters.com Super 7 high school baseball poll.
Here’s a look at the latest rankings:
No. 1 CARDINAL MOONEY
The Cardinal Mooney Cardinals had another impressive week to maintain its perch atop the poll at No. 1.
The Cardinals, who are 18-3 on the season, recorded wins over Eastern Buckeye Conference champ Alliance by a 6-3 final and a 20-win University School squad by a 7-6 final.
The Cardinals are averaging 8.3 runs per game and winning their contests by an average of five runs per game.
Mooney will begin Division IV sectional tournament baseball play this week.
No. 2 CANFIELD
Canfield, which has been on a roll, soared to No. 2 in the rankings.
The Cardinals (18-7) have won 11 straight games and posted four triumphs last week over Louisville (5-4), West Branch (4-3), Poland (7-5) and South Range (4-1).
Canfield’s mound staff has twirled six shutout wins this spring.
The Cards open Division III sectional tourney action this week.
No. 3 LAKEVIEW
Lakeview, a winner of seven straight contests, moved up to No. 3 in the poll.
The Bulldogs, who have compiled a 17-6 ledger, posted wins over the Struthers Wildcats (9-1) and West Branch Warriors (13-10) last week.
The Bulldogs’ pitching staff has held seven of its opponents to a run or less this season.
The second-seeded Bulldogs will play in Division V sectional tourney action this week.
No. 4 McDONALD
McDonald checks in at No. 4 this week after posting a trio of triumphs last week.
The Blue Devils (15-5) outscored three opponents by a combined 25-3 last week, including wins over Mineral Ridge (7-3), Western Reserve (6-0) and South Range (12-0).
McDonald, which is top-seeded in the Division VII ranks, drew a sectional tournament bye and will be involved in district tournament play next week.
No. 5 HOWLAND
The Howland Tigers jump back into the rankings at No. 5 this week.
The Tigers (13-7) recorded two victories over the Boardman Spartans by scores of 6-2 and 5-4 last week in addition to a triumph over the Salem Quakers by a 6-5 final.
The Tigers are penciled in to Division III sectional tourney action this week.
No. 6 LaBRAE
The LaBrae Vikings hold down the No. 6 spot in the ratings.
The Vikings (16-5) split their two games last week, falling to Warren Champion 3-2 but rebounded with a 6-5 verdict over the Girard Indians.
LaBrae opens action in the Division VI sectional tournament this week.
No. 7 POLAND
Poland dropped several spots to No. 7 in the poll after sustaining a pair of setbacks last week.
The Bulldogs (13-4) lost to rival Canfield (7-5) and Eastern Buckeye Conference member Carrollton (5-0).
Poland, which is the fifth-seeded team, will play in Division V sectional tournament play this week.
