Seven greater Mahoning Valley-area teams that have advanced to regional play headline this week’s mahoningmatters.com Super 7 high school softball poll. Those seven teams own a collective record of 141 wins and 31 losses.
Here’s a look at the rankings:
No. 1 AUSTINTOWN FITCH
Austintown Fitch, which steamrolled its way through an unbeaten regular season and has also been dominant in the postseason, easily remains No. 1 in the poll.
The Division I Falcons are 24-0 on the season and captured a big-school district championship last week with a 4-1 triumph over the Perrysburg Yellow Jackets.
Fitch is averaging an incredible 12 runs per game, while its pitching staff is allowing just 1.8 runs per contest, an average margin of victory of over 10 runs per contest.
The Falcons will play Berea Midpark in regional action this week.
No. 2 CARDINAL MOONEY
Cardinal Mooney, which has been on a roll over the second half of the season, has vaulted to No. 2 in the rankings.
The Cardinals own a 17-6 record and have won six of their past eight games. It has also been impressive in tournament play which includes posting a 10-1 Division V district championship win over traditional Ohio power Warren Champion last week.
Cardinal Mooney will play South Range in Division V regional play this week.
No. 3 LAKEVIEW
Lakeview, a returning state qualifier from last season, holds down the No. 3 spot in the rankings.
The Division IV Bulldogs have compiled a 23-5 ledger and are riding a five-game winning streak. They won a Division IV district championship last week while rolling past the Northwest Indians 9-2.
Lakeview is penciled in against the Field Falcons in a Division IV regional semifinal this week.
No. 4 SOUTH RANGE
Division V power South Range is No. 4 in the rankings this week.
The Raiders have been one of the Mahoning Valley strongest teams over the second half of the season. They have won 15 of their past 16 games and have compiled a 21-7 record.
South Range won a Division V district title last week while defeating the Rootstown Rovers 13-1.
The Raiders will play Cardinal Mooney in regional play this week.
No. 5 MAPLEWOOD
Maplewood, which owns the second best record in the greater Mahoning Valley behind unbeaten No. 1 Fitch at 25-2, is No. 5 in the ratings.
The Rockets’ pitching staff has been incredible. Maplewood has held 22 of its opponents to a run or less and posted 14 shutout wins this spring.
The Rockets won a Division VII district championship last week with a 7-0 whitewash of the Ashtabula St. John Heralds.
Maplewood will play Jackson-Milton in the Division II regional this week.
No. 6 JACKSON-MILTON
Jackson-Milton jumps into the poll this week at No. 6.
The Bluejays have recorded a 19-6 mark and are a high-scoring team. J-M is averaging 11.1 runs per game.
Jackson-Milton captured a D7 district crown last week following its 14-8 triumph over Cuyahoga Heights.
The Bluejays will go up against Maplewood in regional play this week.
No. 7 SOUTHINGTON CHALKER
Traditional small-school power Southington Chalker rounds out this week’s rankings at No. 7.
The Wildcats are 12-5 and are averaging 9.3 runs per game.
Southington won a Division VII district championship last week after defeating the Lowellville Rockets 16-2.
Chalker will face the Newark Catholic Green Wave in regional action this week.
