World’s largest steam locomotive making 30-minute stop in Struthers

For the first time, the world’s largest steam locomotive in operation is traveling through the Midwest, with stops scheduled in northeast Ohio, as well as Pennsylvania, Indiana and New York.

The Big Boy No. 4014 spans 132 feet in length and weighs roughly 1.2 million pounds.

Big Boy is stopping in Struthers on June 12 as part of its historic coast-to-coast tour to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary.

Built during World War II, Big Boy No. 4014 is a historic machine in action making scheduled whistle-stops, generally 15- to 30- minutes long, giving fans a closer look.

The largest operating steam locomotive will stop for a free viewing east of South Bridge Street in Struthers on June 12 from 11:30 a.m. until noon.

In order to keep viewers safe, organizers of the coast-to-coast tour ask everyone to stay back at least 25 feet from all railroad tracks.

According to Union Pacific, No. 4014 is one of eight Big Boys still in existence today, and the only one in operation.

It was restored to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the transcontinental railroad’s completion in 2019.
