Youngstown Cardinal Mooney baseball team makes school history
Youngstown Cardinal Mooney’s baseball team made school history this spring by becoming the first Cardinal squad in the diamond sport to advance to the state tournament.
The Cardinals won sectional, district and regional Division IV championships while advancing to last week’s state tournament at Akron’s 17 Credit Union Park. They dropped a 12-7 decision to the Sandusky Perkins Pirates in a state semifinal. Perkins went on to win the Division IV state title with a 5-1 win over Bishop Fenwick.
Mooney finished with a final record of 24-4. The Cardinals posted an offensive average of 8.1 runs per game this season, while its pitching staff ended with a team ERA of 3.2 runs allowed per-game. Those numbers included holding 13 opponents to a run or less per contest while recording five shutouts.
Mooney was the only greater Mahoning Valley-area baseball team to advance to the state tourney this season.
