If you are road tripping this summer, grab your favorite travel snacks and make sure the tank is full.

According to NACS Fuel Retailing: “72% of Americans plan to road trip this summer,” and “57% of survey respondents said they plan to travel more this summer than last year.”

However, with gas on the rise, it might be worth traveling with a budget. In a new study by WalletHub, US states were ranked based on which ones are the best and worst for road trips. The study considered factors like the cost of gas, dining, activities and accommodations, but also analyzed the overall safety of each area and number of family friendly events.

So, where does Ohio rank? Let’s find out:

Is Ohio a good state for road trips?

According to the study, Ohio ranked the 10th best state for summer road trips.

Ohio received an overall score of 57.23, with high scores in the activities category as well as safety and cost categories.

States that made the top five best for summer road trips are: Minnesota, Utah, Louisiana, New York and Florida.

The worst ranked states for summer road trips are: Rhode Island, Delaware, Connecticut, California and Maryland.

Tips for budgeting and making the most out of road trips

Here are some tips from the experts:

“Plan for car snacks, drinks,” said Melanie Campbell Assistant Professor of Hospitality and Tourism Management at Davis & Elkins College. “And avoid convenience stores.”

Another expert recommended embracing penny-pinching. “If you want to make your money stretch, you have to ditch the luxury mindset and channel your inner 19-year-old on a broke, wild mission,” said Andrew Burnstine with Lynn University.

Other tips:

  • Download tracking apps for fuel
  • Make sure to check the weather forecast
  • Make sure to have extra oil, coolant and other car maintenance tools in the trunk
