Mahoning County provides update on severe weather response, ongoing recovery efforts
Mahoning County officials said they continue to coordinate response and recovery efforts following the severe weather that struck the area Sunday afternoon.
On Monday, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine joined local and state leaders on a tour of the impacted neighborhoods and business districts to assess the extent of the damage.
Given the widespread destruction, the Mahoning County Board of Commissioners convened a special meeting to adopt a Resolution declaring Mahoning County a State of Emergency.
Governor DeWine signed necessary documentation to formally confirm the emergency designation, which will open the door for potential state and federal assistance to support recovery operations.
“By declaring a state of emergency, we’re able to expedite state assistance in communities that need help with cleanup,” DeWine said. “We want to do everything we can to help those impacted by this storm recover and move forward.”
The storm caused significant damage throughout the county, leaving numerous roads blocked by fallen utility poles, power lines, and trees. Residents are urged to avoid these hazardous areas, especially where downed electrical lines may still pose a threat. Roads marked with barricades are closed for public safety and should not be bypassed.
Officials said Ohio Edison crews remain fully engaged in restoration efforts, supported by more than 200 contractor personnel and 80 tree‑clearing crews working across Mahoning County to restore power as quickly and safely as possible.
Residents are reminded to prioritize safety, avoid driving through closed roadways, and refrain from moving any barriers. With humid conditions and the possibility of additional storms, the Commissioners encourage everyone to check on neighbors, particularly older adults, and to support local emergency responders who continue to work extended hours.
Community members are asked to document any property damage and submit photos via mail to the Mahoning County Emergency Management Agency at ema@mahoningcountyoh.gov or call our EMA office 330-740-2200.
