Hot Dog Shoppe celebrates 80 years with $1 chili dogs in Warren

Celebrating its 80th anniversary in Warren, The Hot Dog Shoppe is a beloved Mahoning Valley institution founded in 1946 by Paul Trevelline.

For the last 50 years, The Hot Dog Shoppe has been known for its signature spinning hot dog sign, but it stopped functioning last year.

Annette White-Swanson is the general manager at The Hot Dog Shoppe in Warren.

“The spinning hot dog has been a landmark everyone in the area knows,” White-Swanson said. “When it stopped working last year, people noticed.”

During the 80th anniversary celebration on July 15, community members are invited to grab a $1 chili dog and see the spinning sign restored.

The celebration will feature a formal ceremony attended by Warren Mayor Doug Franklin and Ariann Barile Smith, District Outreach Representative for U.S. Congressman David P. Joyce (OH-14), who will present an official proclamation recognizing The Hot Dog Shoppe’s 80 years of service to the community.

“Bringing it back to life for our 80th anniversary, on National Hot Dog Day no less, feels like the perfect full-circle moment. We can’t wait to share it with Mayor Franklin, our congressional friends, our longtime team members, and every customer who walks through the door for a $1 chili dog,” White-Swanson said.

Longtime employees will also be honored at the original Warren location at 740 West Market St., including many team members who have dedicated between 20 and 40 years to the restaurant.

“This is more than an anniversary. It’s a thank-you to the people of Warren and the Mahoning Valley who have made us a part of their lives for 80 years,” White-Swanson said. “From the first chili dog in 1946 to the spinning hot dog that has welcomed families for half a century, this place is woven into the fabric of our community. Getting that landmark spinning again and celebrating our incredible long-tenured team and the everyday heroes who keep our towns running is the perfect way to mark this milestone.”

Throughout its 80th anniversary year, The Hot Dog Shoppe has been recognizing community members, like first responders and road maintenance teams, to free breakfast on Tuesday mornings.
