Amtrak train derailed in Missouri

An Amtrak train traveling from Los Angeles to Chicago with more than 200 passengers onboard derailed Monday afternoon after it struck a dump truck at a crossing in northern Missouri.

Three people died when cars of an Amtrak train traveling from Los Angeles to Chicago struck a dump truck and derailed Monday afternoon at a crossing in northern Missouri.

More than 200 passengers were on board at the time of the crash, which was reported about 12:50 p.m. near Mendon, Missouri, Amtrak said. After the derailment, some of the passengers shared photos and videos of the aftermath.

Two of the deaths were on the train. The other person who died was in the dump truck.

The train was identified as a Southwest Chief Train 4. Mendon is about 100 miles northeast of Kansas City.
