A 6-year-old girl’s calls for help led officers to find her mother, who had passed out behind the wheel of a vehicle in Wheat Ridge after taking fentanyl, Colorado police said.

The girl’s cries for help attracted a passing postal carrier Saturday, July 16, police said in a news release. The mother had pulled to the side of the road before taking fentanyl and passing out.

“This could have been so much worse, but we are relieved to report the little girl is safe with a family member after the driver was arrested,” police wrote.

Earlier Saturday, a different officer spotted two people passed out in a stolen vehicle in a motel parking lot, police said. The driver had taken fentanyl.

“It’s imperative people who make the decision to use a dangerous — even deadly substance — behind the wheel are off the streets before they hurt themselves, their passengers (their own families), or your family,” police wrote.

Wheat Ridge is about 6 miles northwest of downtown Denver.
