Two men invaded a man’s apartment, shot him and sprayed him with bear mace in Oregon, deputies say. Now they’ve been arrested.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the 9100 block of SW Oleson Road in Tigard on Sunday, Aug. 28, after apartment complex residents reported hearing gunshots and seeing a man bleeding and injured, according to a sheriff’s office news release.

The man found inside the apartment appeared to be shot through both legs, deputies said. He had been pistol-whipped and sprayed with bear mace. Deputies treated him until paramedics from the Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue and Metro West Ambulance Service arrived, according to the news release.

The sheriff’s office says as of Tuesday, Aug. 30, the victim is being treated for his injuries at a local hospital and remains in stable condition.

Detectives located the accused intruders, 26-year-old Levi Garey and 42-year-old Joseph Mathews, in an apartment in Wilsonville. On Aug. 29, detectives went to the location and, with the help of the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team and Wilsonville Police Department, took the men into custody, according to the news release.

They were then booked into the Washington County Jail. Garey was charged with attempted second-degree murder and felon in possession of firearms, deputies said. Mathews was charged with first-degree burglary and third-degree assault.

Tigard is about 10 miles southwest of Portland.
