Story about how man died slowly unraveled, CA officials say. Now, girlfriend charged
After 32-year-old Edevion White was found stabbed to death inside an apartment during a robbery in May 2023, California police said they were searching for two men who fled from the area wearing ski masks.
Through a yearlong investigation, however, Pleasanton police learned something was awry, according to a Sept. 13 Facebook post from the department.
“The story of the two masked robbers … we determined was untrue,” Lt. Erik Silacci told Pleasanton Weekly. “We believe the suspect fabricated that story.”
And now the suspect, 27-year-old Kennedy Lenai Stith, has been charged with murder and is accused of fatally stabbing White, her boyfriend at the time, inside the Pleasanton apartment, the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office said in a Sept. 17 news release.
Following White’s death, police made multiple pleas to the public for information, one as recent as August.
“Recent developments include an anonymous tip received by our detectives, which may provide important insights into the case,” police said in a Facebook post. “However, additional evidence is necessary to corroborate this information and advance the investigation.”
Stith’s story began to unravel with investigation, police said, The Mercury News reported.
“For instance, White’s body fell next to the front door, making it difficult for the alleged robbers to escape after they had mortally wounded him,” police said, according to the newspaper.
Police said they also grew suspicious when Stith failed to show for a scheduled interview following her initial statement, the newspaper reported.
Stith was arrested at her home in Oakland on Thursday, Sept. 12, police said.
She is being held without bail and is expected to appear in court Sept. 24, online jail records show.
Pleasanton is about a 40-mile drive southeast from San Francisco.
