A sweet and jubilant dog is turning heads during her stay at a Kansas shelter. Not because of her cute looks, but because of her happiness.

“Some dogs go downhill when they are put in a shelter environment.. well.. some improve with the consistent routine and this is the case with Millie,” the Brown County Humane Society in Hiawatha said in an Oct. 23 Facebook post.

Kennel depression is a real thing when it comes to some shelter dogs, a 2006 study published in “Physiology and Behavior” said.

“Animal shelters are an extremely stressful environment for a dog, most specifically due to social isolation and novel surroundings,” the study said. “The stress response of dogs housed in this environment may be alleviated through human interaction shortly after arrival.”

But not for the 2-year-old mama.

“This BEAUTIFUL mixed breed girl came in as a stray who had recently weaned pups. Her owner never claimed her. She was a lil high strung when she came in but has chilled out and has turned into the most AMAZING girl ever!” the shelter said.

While she’s excellent with kids and other dogs, Millie doesn’t care too much for cats, her pet profile says.

According to the shelter post, Millie was best friends with a pup named Spencer, who was recently adopted, so the quicker she finds a loving home, the better.

For more information on Millie and other adoptable pets, visit the shelter’s website.

Hiawatha is about a 70-mile drive north from Topeka.
