Abbie Bosak, a loan officer with Rapid Mortgage Company in Poland, is the village’s newest council member.

In a special election Tuesday evening, the village’s four voting council members split their ballots between Bosak and Martha Morgan, the development director for Youngstown CityScape and a village council member from 2018 to 2021.

Mayor Tim Sicafuse cast the tie-breaking vote for Bosak. He said he thinks Bosak is young and ambitious and will point the council in the right direction for the future.

“I am sure she will do a good job on the council,” he said.

The third candidate up for consideration was Jeremy DeMarco, a Youngstown State University student, who did not receive any votes.

Bosak, 27, replaces former council member Anthony Lattanzio, who recently resigned to further his medical career.

Lattanzio was elected in November. Bosak will serve the remaining three years of his unexpired term. The council seat will come up for re-election in November 2025.

Sicafuse said he felt Morgan’s council experience made her more qualified, but that he admired Bosak’s quest to learn and contribute to the community.

“Besides serving on our strategic planning committee, Abbie has been attending council meetings regularly this year. Although Martha has more experience because she’s been on council for years, I am most impressed by Abbie’s ambition, and I also admire her eagerness to learn about the job,” he said.

Bosak said she got involved in local government because of the school system, specifically North Elementary School, “which is near my house and has sat empty for several years.

“After concerns about the school system were brought to the attention of members of the council, I was invited to join the strategic planning committee that way, instead of just reaching out. I could be a part of it,” Bosak said.

“I presented before the council earlier this year and was appointed to the strategic planning committee that oversees various local projects. A good example is the school system. Currently, we are building a walking and biking path to connect the north side of town with the village center,” she said.

Although Bosak noted that the other two candidates were also qualified, she was confident that she was more qualified for the position because she was more prepared.

“Jeremy DeMarco would be an excellent candidate to run again, perhaps in a regular election. I do think he has a lot to bring to the table,” Bosak said.
