Here’s why the USDA issued a public health alert about a Trader Joe’s soup

The USDA issued a public health alert about one lot of frozen Trader Ming’s Chicken & Vegetable Wonton Soup sold at Trader Joe’s stores after a packaging error created a food allergy danger.

Public health alerts get issued when the USDA believes that the food can no longer be bought, but might be in consumers’ refrigerators or freezers.

Instead of Chicken & Vegetable Wonton Soup, some of the bowls have shrimp and pork. Shrimp is an allergen and, obviously, bowls of the Chicken & Vegetable Soup wouldn’t include shrimp as an allergen in the ingredient listing. That’s not a problem for most people, but potentially a serious problem for those with a shellfish allergy.

Fortune Avenue Foods, which made the soup for Trader Joe’s on Nov. 18, told the USDA’s Food Safety Inspection Service about the problem after learning of the problem from a customer.

Trader Joe’s says the affected lot went only to New York; New Jersey; Washington, D.C.; Maryland; Virginia; Southern California; Arizona; Delaware; Pennsylvania; Utah; and Southern Nevada.

If you have 10.75-ounce bowls of Trader Ming’s Chicken & Vegetable Wonton Soup, lot No. 31FA22, with EST. P-18823 in the USDA mark of inspection, you have three choices: Eat it anyway, throw it out or return it to the Trader Joe’s where you bought it for a full refund.

Those with questions about this can contact Fortune Avenue Foods’ Cindy Deets by phone at 909-930-5989 or by email at cindy@fortuneavenuefoods.com.
