Gov. Mike DeWine opens first rest area equipped with universal changing station in Ohio
Gov. Mike DeWine joined representatives from the Ohio Department of Transportation, Ohio Department of Disabilities and an organization called Changing Spaces Ohio at a rest stop in Fayette County.
The governor traveled to the rest area to celebrate the completion of the state’s first universal changing station inside the I -71 northbound rest stop in Jeffersonville.
It’s the first of 29 Ohio rest areas set to be upgraded with universal changing stations by the end of 2026, part of Gov. DeWine’s vision to improve the travel experience, especially for adults with developmental disabilities.
“This rest area really represents our commitment to not only serving the needs of the people of Ohio, but everyone who is traveling through the state,” Gov. DeWine said. “This is a private family restroom that provides a clean, safe area for people with disabilities and medical conditions and their caregivers to tend to their needs.”
The changing station has a large, adjustable table to be used by people of any height, weight or mobility level.
“This day has been in the making for quite some time,” he said. “It started when two loving, dedicated Ohio moms told us about the challenges they faced when traveling with their sons. They suggested that we put these in our rest areas and we are starting to do that with this one here.”
Gov. DeWine recognized Jennifer Corcoran and Kim Kirkwood from Changing Spaces Ohio.
“This is about inclusion, opportunity and dignity,” Gov. DeWine said. “It’s a continuation of my commitment since 2019 to establish Ohio as a disability-inclusive state and model employer of individuals with disabilities.”
In addition to the 29 new stations at Ohio rest areas, Gov. DeWine said the state has plans to start installing the changing stations in more public places.
“We are working with local officials in urban and rural areas to make sure this happens with the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities,” he said.
So far, there are 136 universal changing tables in public spaces in 42 counties across Ohio, according to the governor, including local libraries, zoos, fairgrounds and community centers.
“Sixteen counties now have mobile units that can be moved for community events, festivals and county fairs. We can bring those in to any event or gathering, and we’re going to continue to expand as we move forward,” said Gov. DeWine. “These efforts have made Ohio the national leader in commitment to universal changing stations and tables, and we’re very proud of that.”
